Hence the need for a non-profit vaccine company... I went to a talk last spring where a scientist proposed starting a non-profit vaccine company that would partner with manufacturers in the third world and university researchers to develop vaccines that would mostly have a market in third world countries that normal for-profit pharma doesn't care about because they're not profitable.

It was a pretty good proposal, pretty inspiring... I'll have to find the guy's info.

I was thinking about this some more this morning, especially as it relates to vaccines and such. Vaccines just aren't very profitable, but they're very very necessary for public health and also bio-defense. It seems like such an industry should be either heavily subsidized, heavily regulated (to insure adequate funding and proper priorities), or just simply part of the government. I'm not even talking about the entire pharmaceutical industry (although an argument could be made for that as well), but just vaccine research and manufacturing.
